here’s what i’d like to do. i’d like to have multiple pages with items where users can select items (similar to an e-commerce shopping cart setup) and then reach a page where they can total the items, and have the option to print the page out or email it to me for a price quote.
can i do this with modx? should i try to use something like shopx and somehow skip the final checkout steps? or should i try to use zencart or some other third party e-commerce? or is there a solution that’s not even related to e-commerce?
i’ve never done anything like this before. does anybody have any ideas?

ShopX should suit you just fine; its cart works great, it’s the tax/shipping/payment modules that sort of gum up the works!
Just have your catalog in a section of documents, use the plugin and the "add to cart" snippets for the Ditto summaries and the individual item pages, and the checkout cart snippet, and with a little minor tweaking (such as getting rid of the tax status and price fields) it should work just fine. In fact, instead of the checkout snippet, you could use an eForm with an extra function to grab the values from the SESSION and load them in the eform for final customer validation, then email it painlessly.
