I know clients are going to create a new sub-document and just forget to uncheck that so there’s no need to leave it checked.
I suppose you could use wayfinder to only output the top level menu so it wouldn’t matter. But the could create top level pages too.
Any ideas?

Make up a default document with "show in menu" unchecked, and then instruct your client to duplicate that document when they want to make a new one.
