I have MODx installed at my root.

Can I create a "test" directory or sub domain and have a "clean" MODx install there that does not change anything at my root? (if I add documents, they don’t pick up where root document id #’s ended, etc.)

What I’d like to do is create a bare bones blog template that functions. Once I get it functioning with the standard snippets, etc, I’d like to style it.

Ultimately, if my brain can grasp MODx well enough, I’d like to be able to offer a "Blog Template". Simple and bare in styling, but full of features. (Hopefully commented well enough so that newbies like me can tweak to their hearts content.)

Left Blank and Scotty D have great full feature blogs on their sites. I think a lot of the less experienced MODx users (me!) would find it very useful to have a functioning blog wrapped up in a template. (BTW is there one out there that I missed?)

I keep messing stuff up taking what I like from the "tagging" tutorial and taking basics from the "blog" tutorial and trying to adjust for the new snippets that aren’t referenced and then reading Jot to try to get it to do what I want.

I’m looking to use Ditto, Jot, tagLinks, Reflect, etc to create a blog that has comments, lists the archives by year and month, lists the categories with links to the pages of posts/comments for just that category and more.

The functions are out there and there are separate tutorials for them, but as a newbie trying to do this myself, I know I would kill for a zip file with all the info in one spot.

I don’t think a template for this exists already. If it does, PLEASE let me know!!! I have found templates that do pieces of it.

On my site now, Scotty D has shared his knowledge and blog set up with me and I’m trying to tweak it to fit my site. THANKS SD!!!

In picking apart his code, reading tutorials on how to tweak to my needs, etc I found myself wishing for it all zipped up in a neat template that includes it all - a template file, a css file, chunks, snippets and TV’s needed, etc. Using as close to the "standard" snippets as possible.

I’m willing to tackle this. But it will probably take MONTHS if I can get it working, so don’t hold your breath.

And I’m already stuck at my first step - a clean site to start building on that won’t mess up my currently half built messed up root site.

Is this silliness and/or a waste of time?

      Hello there,

have you thought about running a web-server on your local machine (instead one a server online), that way you can develop what ever you like as and when you please.

i run mac os X and run it as a web-server, with MySQL installed and php so i can use modx (for example) on there.

      just a suggestion.

Yes; just make sure your .htaccess files are configured correctly (the inner one must have the extra subdirectory).

There is a line in the .htaccess file that needs to be edited f you are running MODx within a subdirectory. So, open up your .htaccess file and look for the following lines:

              RewriteEngine On
              RewriteBase /
              RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
              RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
              RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]

The following line needs to be changed to:

              RewriteBase /yourmodxsubdirectory/

This is stated in the documentation, so you might want to refer to that for any parameters I’m missing here. However, this should answer your question.
