Insert DBAPI

I try to use the insert function from the DBAPI like this:

$ds = $modx->db->insert("fieldname" ,"db.table", "value");

but I’got a the following error message:

execution of a query to the database failed - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ’artist’ at line 1
INSERT INTO db.table fieldname
