I’m not having a problem; check that .js file and make sure it got uploaded properly. Sometimes files get uploaded with scrambled line endings, making the first comment suddenly take up the whole file since there is no end-of-line to end the comment.

My TinyMCE works in FireFox and (what most important) – even in Safari!

I think that the problem is a corrupt file (tiny_mc.js). When I try to open this file, whether the copy on the server install, or from my HD, the text editor hangs. This doesn’t happen with other files in the package.

However, two different downloads of 0.9.5 have the same problem, so I think it must be part of the original package. How do I go about getting a replacement of this file, since every time I download it, its the same problem?

And, sadly, this copy doesn’t work in Safari - I suspect that it is the reason for a range of erratic behaviours (pages ’unpublishing’ themselves when edited, for example) that I’ve experienced since moving to 0.9.5. In fact, I’m using Camino because it’s the only browser where I can use the manager reasonably reliably. Firefox and Safari both crap out on the new version.

-- update to the above: I’ve tried downloading the tar file instead (I used the zip file before). The same problem occurs with the tiny_mce.js file: when I try to open it in my standard text editor (textmate), it causes textmate to crash.

I’ve checked it out; it’s one huge line, the tiny_mce_src.js file is 7,285 lines and this is the same thing only with all whitespace removed. I use Smultron, and it makes hard work of opening it, while it has no problem with the src.js file. TexEdit doesn’t seem to have any problem with it, though.

so what does this mean? Can I substitute the _src file by swapping names? The _src file opens without any problems, more or less instantly in Textmate...

That might work. Give it a try.
