In short, yes you will need to know at least HTML (and knowledge of other web technologies such as CSS, PHP, Javascript, MySQL, etc., are a plus) to make the most of MODx. MODx is not an out of the box portal system, like many CMS offerings try to be. Instead, MODx is a Content Management Framework, that gives web designers and web developers a set of tools to do their job more efficiently, including setting up sites for clients so they can update content using web-based rich-text editors (or other methods) without having to pay someone who does know HTML, et. al., each time.

BTW, best forum question ever! I’m still picking myself up off the floor and wiping my eyes...whew...

Yeah, you’d at least need to know a little HTML to play with the templates (unless you were happy with the default one or could install one of the others).

However, if you did want to use one of the templates that are already available, building pages is just a case of using the WYSIWIG editor, so for that you don’t technically need to know HTML.

        It’s a sort of yes/no wink

But I think it is fair to say that "MODx" is not the right answer to the question "What CMS should a non-programmer use?"

Actually, that’s not quite fair either. See my signature.

That was not meant to be any sort of negative remark about MODx which (as a programmer) I love..

But if someone came to ask me "I don’t know any programming, nor do I wish to (or have time to) learn any, what (open source) CMS should I use?" then I wouldn’t say "MODx" but something like "Website Baker" instead...

              Cheers

Very true indeed, and I didn’t take it as a negative comment. MODx is what it is, and you need to be either highly motivated, patient and research-inclined or experienced to get the most out of it. smiley
