I am working on my first MODx site and was wondering if someone could explain how I can add an additional user editable area to a template in addition to the main content area.

Specifically in this instance I want to add a left column which will contain external links to other sites of interest. My client needs to be able to edit this column independently of the main pages and add it to any page they require. I don’t need help with the HTML or CSS, rather the concept behind how this works in MODx - I’ve only ever built bespoke PHP/MySQL sites before and whilst I can appreciate the power of using a framework like MODx I’m struggling to get my head round how it all works.

    Thanks in advance smiley

You could use the getdoc-snippet. Just create a new document and call it´s content with this snippet.

        Hi,

here is an other way to do it.
Create a TV (type:textarea or richText) named for instance content2.
Attach this Tv to the template in which you want to add this field.
        Add in your template [*#content2*].

And if you want the data be displayed in children docs add @INHERIT in TV default value.

        :-)

Thanks guys. I’m starting to get my head round it now - both ways seem straight forward. Thanks for the heads-up on TVs. I read about them in the documentation and wondered if they might be what I was looking for, but I couldn’t picture a ’real-world’ use for them. There’s so much that MODx seems to be capable of - I just love the modularity of it all!
