Hello MODx folks, I’m new to MODx and really to CMS in general. I have MODx installed successfully on a Linux server running Gentoo. I tried to send myself an email from the Contact Us page after the default installation. I got an error that made me realize sendmail was not installed. So I did that, and went into php.ini and entered
sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail -t
After that, the form no longer complained but the email was never received. I’m not sure where the problem is, but I suspect it’s in my PHP setup, or maybe the server itself rather than in MODx. Can someone point me to a likely cause?
Thanks!

Definitely sounds like a server configuration issue, and not much to do with MODx itself. As far as setting up servers from scratch go, that’s a topic that’s way beyond my ability to offer advice.

First thing is to check what value the mail() function returns - if it returns false then there is likely a problem with PHP but if mail() returns true then it’s likely an issue with the SMTP/sendmail program.
In the latter case, you can try seeing if you can catch any emails that are being bounced and see if they state any reasons why they are being rejected.

Wow sometimes it’s the simple things guys...trying to do two things at once, I screwed up the DNS configuration on my server, so the mail could not be sent. It’s now working fine. Thanks again!
