Help with building a business directory where users can edit their listing

I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction ( not looking for a complete solution just some guidance).

I have created a business directory for the community I live in. There are about 1800 businesses in my directory. I would like people to be able to apply for an account to the site and be able to edit their listing by logging in.

Account approval is to be done manually (by phone to ensure we are giving access to the right person).

I have tried this using a separate user authentication script but it has turned into big mess.

Is there a way to associate a user sign up with an listing id from the database so they are able to edit only that item row in the database.

can anyone help, by pointing me in the right direction. I originally tried this in Modx but had troubles so I went to another user authentication script and it has now turned into a nightmare.

I’m pretty sure taht you could do this with PPP.. make profile fields for the listing info and ppp can do the listing too.. but it’s still beta code, don’t know how stable or secure.
