I’ve been searching for a great solution like MODx for ages. I’ve trawled through the forums and sites and now taken the leap to install and play...however I need some help with a problem installing:

I’ve followed the instructions at modxhost but when I go to the url to install the package I get this error:

    Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request

So, here is the error log:

2007-01-04 19:47:51]: error: directory is writable by others: (/home/bastille/public_html/modx-0.9.5/install)
[Thu Jan 4 19:47:52 2007] [error] [client 86.139.160.137] File does not exist: /home/bastille/public_html/404.shtml
[Thu Jan 4 19:47:52 2007] [error] [client 86.139.160.137] File does not exist: /home/bastille/public_html/favicon.ico
[Thu Jan 4 19:47:51 2007] [error] [client 86.139.160.137] File does not exist: /home/bastille/public_html/500.shtml
[Thu Jan 4 19:47:51 2007] [error] [client 86.139.160.137] Premature end of script headers: /home/bastille/public_html/modx-0.9.5/install/index.php

Many thanks, I look forward to contributing in whatever way I can.

Thanks for the suggestion, but i have not .htaccess in the install or parent directory, or even root directory.

I’m keen to get the wraps off, but can’t even install. Words of wisdom are most welcome.

The site I am playing with used to be a Frontpage site - would that have anything to do with it. I have managed in the past to install Joomla, WP etc. It’s obviosuly a permissions thing but where?

        Here’s my environment:

        cPanel Build 10.9.0-CURRENT 56
        Operating system Linux
        Kernel version 2.6.17.6
        Machine Type i686
        Apache version 1.3.37 (Unix)
        PERL version 5.8.7
        Path to PERL /usr/bin/perl
Installed Perl Modules Click to View
        PHP version 4.4.4
        MySQL version 4.1.21-standard
        Path to sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail
        Documentation Click to View
        cPanel Pro 1.0 (RC36)

        and here’s my general info:

        Hosting package Business Lite
        Shared Ip Address 70.86.92.34
        Subdomains 0 / unlimited
        Parked Domains 0 / 0
        Addon Domains 0 / 0
        MySQL Databases 3 / unlimited
        Postgresql Databases 0 / unlimited
        Disk Space Usage 39.95 Megabytes
        MySQL Disk Space 2.46 Megabytes
        Bandwidth (this month) 0.65 Megabytes
        Disk space available 10.05 Megabytes
        Email Accounts 0 / unlimited
        Email Forwarders 0
        Auto-responders 0
        Mailing Lists 0 / unlimited
        Email Filters 0
        Ftp Accounts 0 / unlimited

I’ll try anything suggested, so come on bring it on...

        Kind Regards to you all,

          Hi MODx community,

I’ve now resolved this. After looking in to the server error logs I doscovered that it was solely due to some MODx directories and files having 775 permissions. By changing some of these to 755 everything seemed to be OK and success, I have MODx installed. Is this normal or did I miss a post about changing permissions somewhere?

          Regards,

Not really, permissions can be a tricky item, depending on how a given server is configured. We do what we can, but we can’t foresee every possible configuration.

              Thanks for your reply.

Does this mean that all files should not have "WRITE" for groups enabled?

It would be great if there was a Fantastico installer for MODx...

              Kind Regards

No file or folder should have more permissions than they absolutely need, to keep evildoers out.

That is why I decided to move my domains to hosting that has PHP running "suexec"; instead of the scripts running as the web server user (usually www or apache, sometimes nobody) they get switched to using the script’s owner, which is my ftp user. This way I can have read-only access to all my files, and read-execute only for all the folders so Apache can acess the folders and read the files, but nobody can write to anything except my scripts or my ftp user.
