pfft then I have to wait until I get more familiar with modx then I can probably use it..
I am going to quote rthrash’s forum sig, because it contains important information. If you did not read it, you must. You should read it twice, because it will save you some time in understanding what MODx is and isn’t.
MODx is ideal for developers and CSS designers that need an easy-to-customize web application framework. MODx allows you to turn over sites to end-users for daily maintenance—without worrying. We appreciate thoughtful participation and questions from everyone, but please read the wiki, Google search the forums, learn a bit of PHP and CSS, examine the parameters in the snippet code, and then ask for help. (We’ll offer a more “newbie-friendly” version and author better documentation in the future, but our immediate focus is on core improvements.)
The people who use MODx use it for many reasons, because it allows a tremendous amount of freedom in design, because developing new features for MODx is easier than writing them from scratch because this framework does a lot of the heavy lifting, but it is not a install and then use system. The idea of modx is not to provide a huge library of prebuilt modules, snippets, and extentions so that every possible need that could be anticipated is addressed. The idea here is that if you can code in PHP (or at least understand it when you read the code), you can extend the applications in the core, or come up with entirely new snippets (etc...) to suit your need. Let’s say for instance, you need to extend the webuser registration. you could edit the code, or write a new php class that extends the code, modifying or adding methods to make it do what you want. Then, if you were feeling generous, you could post it here in the hopes that it would be useful for others, but as a developer, you would take comfort in the hope that people unwilling to learn would not just expect you to customize it for them and install it for them because they say they don’t get it.
MODx provides a tremendous environment (and a GREAT excuse) to learn PHP. I didn’t know a lick of PHP when I found MODx, but I liked the idea behind MODx, and I liked the freedom of design that it gave me. So I bought a book and started learning PHP. I had lots of questions (and still do) and the members here are always helpful when I patiently ask for advice or pointers on a subject that I have shown that I at least googled the forums for first. These members are active contributors to this project... in their SPARE TIME! that is a great thing, but they don’t have all kinds of time to make your website for you (for free). If you want to contract out one of the people here to design your website and make everything work, using MODx, perhaps send them a PM with a request for a quote.
