Modx has a very good wysiwyg system that mediawiki doesn’t have, modx supports very easy editing via ajax. If I can set it up so that guests are content editors, do I have a credible wikisolution on my hand?
No, you have an editing free-for-all with no easy linking between pages. You also don’t have any way of going back to a previous version. A key part of a wiki is the wiki markup, which is better than wysiwyg for the purpose of Being A Wiki.
The advantage of wiki markup is that you can link to another document easily. Plus it prevents people going too crazy with a mish-mash of styles.
What exactly are you trying to achieve?
