In my templates I include an IE only CSS file - screen_ie.css. If my design requires IE only CSS then I create the file and add the CSS. However if I don’t need it then I don’t create the file. This is a mistake.

Each time you load a page, the web server will request this non-existant file. If you have friendly URLs turned on then MODx will return the 404 page, which in my case is a copy of the home page. So unbeknown to me, each time someone loads a page on my site the browser is also downloading a copy of the home page - ouch!

The moral of the story is - don’t reference non-existant files in your HTML...

Very good advice, I didn’t thought about befrore.
Perhaps you meant "don’t reference non-existent files in your HTML"?
