I am very new to MODx. My site isn’t even up and running yet, but I’m loving it so far.

I have read all of the Documentation information and am attempting to set up my site as a blog.

I’ve unzipped, uploaded, created the templates and I’m missing 2 snippets according to the install.txt.

PageTrail - would I now use Breadcrumbs?
    DropMenu - Wayfinder?

    Does AJAX Search replace FlexSearchForm?

I am sure I will be back and soon with more questions!

As far as I’m aware, the answer is yes to all three.

      Welcome to MODx smiley

Answer is YES to all of your questions/answers.
Use Breadcrubms, Wayfinder and AjaxSearch and you’ll be all right. wink

              Thanks!

I’m trying not to fill the forum with too many beginner level questions. It seems right now that MODx is geared to users with a higher level of experience.

I’m going to read whatever I can, reinstall it to wipe out all my mistakes and try it again.

I think I saw a venting forum here. You might find me there!

                Welcome Ylice.

Please don’t hesitate to ask questions when you get stuck. You are correct in your observation of MODx’s gearing, but you should know this. There are people who came here with practically zero knowledge of what the internet is who grew to learn XHTML, CSS, PHP, and even developed some modules and snippets for MODx. I think they may have even been added to the testing and QA team.

You mentioned reading whatever you can first. That is truly appreciated. There is a lot of documentation in this forum, but some of it has been covered a long time ago, so it can be hard to find (thank science for the google search bar in the forums!). The wiki is also available, but it is not too ripe yet.

If you really do get stuck, I don’t want you to think you will be chastised for asking a "stupid" question. This is a really open... and intelligent community. I have been seeing a lot of forum "newbies" lately answering what I perceived to be advanced MODx usage questions, and answering them very eloquently. It seems the forum is growing more quickly right now than at any other time at the past. With that growth has come a lot of experts in a lot of fields. This community is a very exiting one to be part of right now, so as a person who’s "Been there"... I look forward to the short time period of your questions and the hopeful long future as a fellow MODx-er and help provider grin

                  Thanks Dr Scotty!

I actually reinstalled MODx and this time installed the sample site. I would strongly suggest for any "beginner".

I now have hopes that I can look at the guts and figure some of this out!

I had described what I wanted to do with my site in another post - "MODx for Idiots Book?" and had run across your site while searching the forums.

You have almost exactly what I’m working to build! I also want to add a forum to mine.

I will keep posting questions and reading! But I think with a sample site to "tweak", I will go much further than starting from scratch!

                  Thanks again!

I’m not a php newbie (actually I’m just finishing with three projects, all of them based on MODx). What still makes me unsure sometimes, however, is my messy workflow. I mean, even if you are "geeky" enough there is still something (and not just one thing) what you have to learn (or just figure out somehow for yourself) in addition to your usual web-dev skills.

First web site I made with MODx was pretty messy - full of chunks which, as I now see, are unneccessary, snippets which could be simply replaced by template variables etc. Another problem was (and to be honest, still is) the general workflow - what shall I do at first? Is it better to start with templating or with user rights? etc.

Are there any rules of thumb? Or is it just on my own preference? Could someone provide us with some rough guidelines about how to manage workflow while developing with MODx?

                      Maybe you, Mr. Delicious?
