As a web development freelancer, I’m considering using modx to build my own business site and sites for clients. Modx is licensed under the GPL, which I understand to mean the following:
- I can use modx for free for commercial sites.
- If I develop the modx core code I must release it GPL.
Is that right? Also, I have the following questions:
- If I develop code on top of the modx base, e.g. a snippet which uses the core code but doesn’t modify it, does it have to be released GPL?
- How does the licensing effect how I design/develop my sites, e.g. do the sites have to display a "powered by" logo or make any other concessions?
Whatever the restrictions, I will continue to contribute to modx as much as I can.
