    Specifically ....

    Unauthorized access
You’re not allowed to access file folder

    Just upgraded from 9.5.0 from 9.2.2 ( I believe ).

The site is showing in the preview in the manager, but in the browser gives the above error.

    PHP Version 4.3.11
    MySql 4.1.11
    Zend Engine v1.3.0 on Linux

I am using "php_flag register_globals Off" in the .htaccess file to turn off the Register_globals, but commenting that out doesn’t help, can’t find anything here with search.

    huh

The plot thickens..... good news is that I found my site ( accidentally ) , by refreshing the /install url after I had deleted the /install folder.

So I can get to the index by typing in /ljxgflsidufgl after the url, it defaults to the index, only problem is the root itself doesn’t default to the index.

As in www.******.com shows the error message.

www.******.com/index.php or www.****.com/random_stuff defaults to the main page.

      Still confused, however.

For some reason it’s not accepting the index.php as the default index page. Take a hard look at the .htaccess file. Did you clear the site cache after the installaton?

          Yes.

I did have the path wrong in the .htaccess originally ( the site in a subdirectory ) , but have since cleared the cache.

            *bangs head against wall*

There just happenned to be a index.html file with...

            <h2>Unauthorized access</h2>
You're not allowed to access file folder

... included in the upgrade, which I hadn’t really paid any attention to. For some reason my site was using that as it’s start page and index.php as the default page.

Cheap fix, I deleted the index.html file.

Most web servers are configured to use index.html/index.htm before index.php as the index page. You can change this in your .htaccess file:
Using .htaccess, you can define additional index filenames and/or change the order of precedence.
To define your index page as hieronymous.html add the following line to your .htaccess file:

              DirectoryIndex hieronymous.html

This will cause the server to look for a file named hieronymous.html. If it finds that file, it will display it.
If it does not find that file, it will return a 404 Missing Page error.

To change the order of precedence, enter a DirectoryIndex command with multiple file names on the same line.
The order in which the file names are listed (from left to right) determines the order of precedence. For example,

              DirectoryIndex hieronymous.html index.cgi index.php index.html

Then I would have thought that I wouldn’t have been the first to experience this problem.... however...

I worked out what must have happenned ( once again sloppiness on my part ).

I installed a clean version of 9.5.0 earlier on today, during the course of that, probably when chmodding I must accidentally ftp’d the index.html that lives in the /assets folder into the root folder of the install files that live on my hard drive. ( at 6.44 am as it goes, before my second cup of morning tea )

I then used those files to upgrade an old version of ModX.

Therefore adding a bogus index.html file to the root of the upgrade.

Therefore I couldn’t find anyone else who had had the same issue.

                Thanks for the help.

Actually maybe this should be added to the installation instrustions (or the comments in the .htacces file). Most new hosting accounts come with an index.html file (that usually says something like "website under construction"), and you almost always need to delete that for MODx to load as the default page for the reason Susan describes above. Seems like you probably aren’t the first person to spend some time scratching your head over this, since I find it’s always the simple things that are the most frustrating.
