Explain the use of tv and chunk by a simple example?

I’m having a problem , I’m reading the instructions and documentations but I don’t really understand the point. It seems I’m a person who need simple examples.

I understood the use of chunks like: use it for your impress oder contact, which should be the same on every side.

So can somebody give me an example for the use of TV’s, and (advanced topic ) TV and chunks together? In which situation you would use, what kind of "problem" would you solve with TV’s and chunk’s ?

Well, you should look at a chunk as a ’dead’ piece of html, it’s not dynamic or anything, all it does is contain HTML (or snippet/tv calls), you can use chunks to easely display a snippet or other content on one or multiple pages, instead of pasting i.e. the comments call on every news article.

A template variable is a thing that can contain values defined by a user, but also ’raw’ php code and loads and loads of other things, for those you should check the documentation (link in the topnav here).

OK, dynamic and static, for me thats still very abstract, but its getting warmer.
Your example of comments call:
You mean, I could decide if i want a comment call on a page or not by choosing the tv?
How would that look like in tv?



The dynamic in this example would be the choice yes or no.

Can you think of another scenario with more dynamics?

Examples definitely help everyone to understand new things, so don’t be shy about asking for them.

Here is a basic example of how most people use chunks and TVs:

{{ourAddress}} = a chunk in which you have stored your company or organization’s address. It includes the HTML you want to use to format this info whenever you show it. You would probably place this in one or more of your document templates (perhaps in the footer), since you’re going to want it on all pages.

[*sidebarContent*] = a TV that you have set up to hold the text that you want in your right sidebar column on all your main pages (you’ve linked this TV to your main template). Whenever you edit a document with this template, you’ll see a place where you can enter your sidebar content as well as the standard document values (like title, alias, and page content). You have also placed this in your main template code (in the sidebar, where you want it to appear), but unlike your address chunk (above) the TV’s value changes with every page, so you can have different sidebar content on each page that includes it.

What I think is confusing for many people about TVs is that they can do so much more than this, and so they can seem overwhemling. But start there and you’ll see where TVs usually fit into your structure. Then once you feel confident using TVs for this sort of simple task, start experimenting with their advanced features and you’ll probably have a better idea of just how powerful they can become.

On my site I am starting a kind of fish database (small one, only fishes I met personally

It would be very helpful, to have the table with the generell input, so that I only have to fill the picure and names. What would be a good way to do it?

My idea now is:

• making a chunk with the table and text (familiy:.., place: ....)
• 
  put tv´s in the chunk for the picure, the familiy-name, the actual size....

I will try it right now, but however, like some advice if that is a good idea or the wrong way.

It doesn’t sound as if you really need any chunks to do what you want to do. Just create some TVs and add them to a specific template for pages with fish. You can probably even use drop-down menus to select common values for some of your info (family perhaps).

thank you so much, Im starting to understand the functions and possiblities by chunks and tv. (Maybe next week I will look for the pluggins ) )
Im doing it in the template now, which is really making sense, and I think I will also use it, to put my icon-pictures on the sites. Im really happy that I started that only 4 days ago, so I have only a few picture put in the hard way, the new method will be much more comfortable.
