That is what they are for (if you are referring to the new field in the document editing page). A snippet has to use them, however. I believe that Wayfinder in its newer versions does.
I specifically added it to be able to add target="_blank" to weblinks, but it will allow a snippet to add the specified strings anywhere they are needed (usually <a .... > tags).
