I am currently in the process of converting my site over from the e107 cms. I see all the potential modx has but am having a few problems figuring out the best approach to take. My site is pretty in depth with tons of php code to manage more than just a simple news/blog/information type site. There are a few key things I need to know if its possible and the best way of going about it.

    • Aside from a basic web registration I need to be able to specify multiple additional registration details that will be stored upon signup.
    • Once a user has registered and is now a member. They will have access to certain parts of the site. I also want them to be able to go to additional registration forms for access to other parts of the site. This would only be possible once logged in because the new registration forms will only ask for additional information regarding the area they want access to.. not things like a new user name... once they register for this part they get added as that user group. So the user can end up being part of multiple user groups based off their initial memberhsip to the site.

I think this is all i really need to get started. I’m sure this topic will expand as i dig deeper and find things I dont really understand.

    Thanks!

Yes, MODx can do this for you, probably very similarly to the way e107 did it for you. See the "WebSignup" snippet. It is included as part of the default install of MODx.

You can set permissions on each page you create and decide who is allowed to view the page. This is a base MODx feature.

The next part might take a custom snippet (php code) to do, but it would also be pretty straight forward, and once you are done writing the snippet you could even use it as your first contribution to the MODx Repository (obviously that is not required... just a nice thing to do).

So to start this snippet, you would want to extend what the WebSignup snippet did originally (add user’s info to the database table (see {PREFIX}.web_users and additionally {PREFIX}.web_user_attributes and {PREFIX}.web_user_settings ) of web users as well as to a db table of web groups ( see {PREFIX}.web_group_access and {PREFIX}.web_group_names ) to add the currently logged logged in user to a new web group with permission to veiw additional pages.

I hope this will get you started, please feel free to ask additional questions if you get stuck.

Thanks for the responses. I have a good idea how I’m going to get started right now as far as the user management and registration. Seems easy enough I just wanted to make sure I was taking the right path.

I’m just used to the way e107 does things so its going to take awhile to get used to modx. Like for example the websignup form. In e107 you would be limited to what you setup in your extended user fields. Then the fields automatically got added to the user registration form which also limited the way you could present this. I believe they have came along was as far as removing the limitations but it seems modx just gives me much more control over how things are done at the same time as providing a base framework to work from.

Just a matter of figuring out exactly what control i have!

Thanks again, any other suggestions would be great.
