I’m interested in building a web app as a method for teaching myself php. This app is basically just number crunching, i’d need it to be able to import an xml type data string from a program and perform basic calculations and organize the output data. I was planning on coding the organizing of the data myself, however i was wondering if a CMS like MODx or whatever would be useful for just managing and inputting the data?
It depends on what you want to achieve. If you simply want to experiment with PHP then you can just write a PHP script without needing MODx or anything else. If you want to create a web site that is user friendly, customizable, etc. for your PHP code then you can use MODx for that.
I would start off by uploading your XML file to your web space and write a simple PHP script that reads in the XML, processes it and then returns a basic web page with no formatting. You can then expand on this later by allowing the user to first upload the XML file using a form. And then finally convert the PHP code into a snippet and use it in a MODx powered web site.

hrm, looking a little more in depth i dont think that any CMS is really what i’d be looking for anyways since i’d be building my own front end anyways and would only be using this for administration. I think i’m actually gonna give ruby on rails a try.
Thanks for the great response though.
good luck with your project swimming bird
