Actually can you check that they are published, you might have forgot to set them to be published

Yes I remove comments from .htaccess and yes I published "css" dir and "style.css" file.
I had to comment out 2 "gzip"-related lines from htaccess though as 1and1 does not support this.

RewriteBase / did the trick!
Every hosting is different so I guess 1and1 setup needed that adjustment.
