        thanks for your help, ive spent the last few hours studying html, and ive got the very basics in my head (no testing please smiley ). i understand that you upload modx to your web space, where is the best place to get web space from, im not thinking of building a site just, as ive only started today, but i would to get some space to "play with", any ideas?

          The best place to get some "space to play with" is on your local machine. Download one of the packages, WAMP for Windows, MAMP for OS X, and LAMP for Linux. Get it all working, put a simple php file named "info.php" with the following:
          <?php
          phpinfo();
          ?>

          and put it in the installed website’s document root, then "http://localhost/info.php" should give you a nice screen full of information about your php installation. It should just work; these packages are pretty solid.

          Then you can play all you want for free.

            Another one for Windows is XAMPP at apachefriends.org, I use that for all my testing on Windows and never had one problem with the XAMPP packages.

              Another great place if you want to get an over all picture of web development/design is http://www.w3schools.com/. Check the "Where to start" section at main page first.
