Hello all. I have a client who needs to know whether MODx will work with other versions of SQL besides MySQL.
Specifically, PostgreSQL. My understanding is that MODx was designed to use MySQL, but I don’t know if it will run with other types of databases. Can anyone help?
@Neatoman, your understanding is correct, and the short answer is that MODx was in fact designed directly for MySQL and is currently completely dependent on it.
However, over the past year, I have been undertaking a complete rewrite of the MODx core on top of a database abstraction layer. This rewrite is occurring in parallel with the 0.9.5 development and the plan is to release a preview of the new MODx core shortly after the release of 0.9.5. Now, this is not to say that the next preview release will then immediately work on PostgreSQL; the single issue that will prevent the new core from immediately working with other database systems, is the legacy code in the manager which uses mysql functions directly. The initial preview will not provide a new manager, but instead works in concert with the existing mysql dependent manager.
So once the manager is rewritten using the new core, we will then be able to start porting MODx to any database platform supported by PDO, the new standard DB layer in PHP 5.1+. Further, because the
database abstraction layer I’ve been working on provides a PHP 4/5 compatible PDO implementation when native PDO is not available on the platform, this will even be possible without having PHP 5.1+.
