is MODx the right tool for the job?

Hi all,

I am looking for software that will let someone build and administer a simple site that will include mostly textual content, images, some sort of gallery and maybe a blog. This person has a technical background but does not have much experience with web design and administration, he can write some HTML but that’s about it.

I have access to my own linux server with root access and have the ability and skills to install and administer whatever software needed but after it is installed and configured, I need my user to simply and easily add content, new pages, upload images, move things around etc.

I’ve been looking into content management applications like Drupal, Joomla and others but I am not sure those are exactly what I need. Basically, I think I need something that is as flexible as possible for me and as simple as it gets for the content editor.

Been reading a bit about MODx and it looks interesting (and fun) but is it the right tool for this job?

That’s exactly what it is for. Setup and administration can be as simple or as complex as the site may require, but basic document management is extremely simple.

Modx is the right tool for 90% of the sites i do ... its a great CMS and more, the only times i use anything else is if im doing a flat out ecommerce site .. And i think eventually modx will sort that out! I have recently used a dating script as well .. which was frankly HORRIBLE to set up, i wonder if anyone is looking into dating snippets for modx....

YOu would need an easy to sign up for members profile , with alterable multi choice options (male/female/gay/straight/bi/swingers etc) (here for friendship/dating/swinging/a laugh etc) eye colour, jobs all that kinda crap.

you would need a good internal messaging sysytem for members to messgae each other with inbox outbox and trash

You would need the ability for users to instant PAGE each other in a live stylee (ajax?) a chat room .

A rating system (0 to hot on the hot scale )

Blogs (modx rules there) , forums (smf bridge W00t)

payment scheme that automatically update susers from standard to premium on return from checkout.

All that kinda thing ... this is why i had to use another script If i was a coder ..id have tried to write it myself!

If its not against the rules here .. i can recomend a dedicated dating script .. its nothing like as nice to use or themable as modx tho .. in fact its a BITCH to theme, once its workig it does the trick tho!

That’s a perfect application for a dedicated platform and not really what MODx is about ... feel free to share.
