Last night I followed modXhost tutorial and was getting the hang of how to drive things. I thought I’d correctly set up some new documents, folders - at least I could see them via my site’s URL, but today it’s all gone. All I’ve got left is the Home page, modified from the default "welcome modx successful install" or whatever it says.
What have I done wrong, or not done? I definately clicked on "save" and could see a list of new things in the ’tree’.
Have a look at the audit / action history (can’t actually remember the name of it) to see if the page adding is still in the history.
To me, it sounds like your host restored your database from an earlier backup.
Oh, I wish it was the case, but things are a little stranger than that. Just now I’ve re-added half a dozen new pages and then added an image to the homepage, uploading it from my computer using the FCK editor - still following the modXhost tutorial.
I noted the path name to where the image was stored, then I ftp all the other images I want to use into the same folder.
I’m not sure whether I saved the page (with the image) before or after the FTP. Anyways, the tree didn’t refresh, so I clicked on the refresh tree icon in the Manager, and then voila, all the structure from last night reappeared and all the new stuff has disappeared. This is unfortunate because I was a lot further down the track, and a bit more organised with what I was doing.
What the hell is going on?
Also, using my FTP client I can’t see any pages that I’ve created, but that would be because they only exist as data in the database right?
My specs: G5iMac - OS10.3.9. Using Firefox. PHP v. 4.4.4. MySQL v. 4.1.21
OKAY.... I’ve just logged out of the manager and then logged in again. It seems that everything at this point gets wiped out of the Assets/images folder. I can go look at the database structure but not sure if this is going to enlighten me.
I have decided to start from scratch. Deleted all database fields, deleted all Modx files and uploaded the install package again.
Incidentally there are loads of images that by name at least look as though I’ll never-ever use them. Bearing in mind that I am not going to be running a site for lots of users and therefore don’t need all the language stuff... so...
can anyone point out which files are optional, so that I can skip them in the upload process in future?
Will there be a need to upload in the future? Well, as there doesn’t seem to be a plausible reason for why the files disappeared, then reappeared, and the new files disappeared - I would say chances are that it will happen again.
cannot access the modX install page. I am now getting an parse error message. Even if I put a dummy .html file I keep getting the same error...
« MODx Parse Error »
MODx encountered the following error while attempting to parse the requested resource:
« PHP Parse Error »
PHP error debug
Error: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Access denied for user ’name’@’localhost’ (using password: YES)
Error type/ Nr.: Warning - 2
File: /home/hostname/public_html/sitename/manager/includes/extenders/dbapi.mysql.class.inc.php

Line 85 source: if (!$this->conn = ($persist ? mysql_pconnect($host, $uid, $pwd) : mysql_connect($host, $uid, $pwd))) {
Regardless of database (which is currently empty), I should be able to upload any passive html file and view it from the url.

That’s a local issue with not being able to connect to your database and nothing to do with MODx. Check your database login / password and try changing the password to remove special characters like $.

Also, if MODx is being invoked even when you try to access a page that really exists, your htaccess is probably screwed.
I have relief of sorts. It turns out the webhosting provider’s server did go belly-up, and they haven’t fixed things as yet. I was beginning to wonder about my abilities.
