PHP (perhaps) Testing if a TV is empty?

Is it possible to test if a TV is empty?

I have a four-coloumn-layout, with a content-TV i three of them. What I want is to call a chunk that make the width of , lets say, coloumn 2 to be 0px if the TV for that coloumn is empty, and ie. 300px if I put content in it.

Get it? Can this be done? This because some documents need more width than others.
