Hi,
I’ve just discovered this wonderful cms and installed the latest beta for some testing on my forthcoming site about music. Generally I like the hierarchical structure given by Modx to content but sometime this could be limiting. More in detail I have a site structure like this:
Home
About
Contact
Jazz
Rock
Pop
In each music genre section/folder I will put biographies of relevant artists. The problem is that some artists are at the same time relevant to jazz and rock or to rock and pop, etc. Drupal taxonomy could be very useful in these cases where the hierarchical structure of Modx is a problem. In fact with Modx I could duplicate a profile present in Jazz and copy it in the Rock folder but if I decide to edit the original profile, I will have to edit also the copy ...
How can I hack Modx to accomodate these hybrid articles?

Hello,
you could use a multiple-select TV called TypeOfMusic with optional entries "jazz", "pop", "rock".
Indeed. Ideally, that would entail having all your artist biographies under (say) Artist Biographies. The Jazz, Rock and Pop pages could then use Ditto to list the pages from Artist Biographies that have a matching music type.
In short - although the manager arranges pages in a hierarchy, and provides useful grouping mechanisms, you are not bound by it.
Hi,
thanks for your promptly replies! Your solution is ideal:
Artists (Folder) -> TV music genre (multi select): Jazz, Rock, Pop, etc.
In fact I’m just learning Template Variables. They are, in my opinion, a very powerful and flexible tool, even superior to Drupal taxonomy.
I have some other questions:
- Where is ditto’s documentation?
- If possibile, the artist profiles should be available in 2 different languages and the user should be able to switch between them at any moment. How can I make this? With TV?
P.S. Modx is a rare gem: great app, simple documentation, lively community! It’s the cms I was looking for.
