Is the beta secure/stable enough for a large scale site? We get a good amount of traffic and are concerned about the resource usage

Yes, I do believe the beta is stable enough; in fact, I’ve used various renegade versions to deploy sites of significant size and traffic. In fact, a lot of the bug fixes and new features should do nothing but improve the site performance (among other benefits, like proper 404 responses).

ALSO ask how big the siteCache.idx.php file should be. say ours is 350K and contains a lot of code about a lot of things. say our site is fairly large (a few hundred pages), but is that how big the file should be?

Yes, the siteCache.idx.php is going to be large and we are aware of the ultimate scalability limitations of this architecture. However, there are several sites deployed with MODx which have thousands of pages and hundreds of editors, and most likely run with siteCache files larger than 350kb, performing quite well. I do not think this issue alone would be causing an issue with your site. However, if it is possible for you to share your siteCache.idx.php file with me directly, I would be happy to take a quick look over it to see if I can spot anything that might be causing a PHP crash and subsequent core dump. Contact me via PM if you are interested in doing so.

FWIW, this is also the first report we’ve had of core dumps. Who’s hosting your site?
we are on a dedicated box that is shared with a linux admin who mantains the server.

We installed a fresh copy of MODx on another site on the server and there were absolutely no problems with it. We then installed MODx again on our site and switched over the config file and the core files started coming back.

We have also removed every snippet and they are still coming.

        Ideas?

What’s your php info look like? It’s possible that there’s something wonky going on between PHP/MySQL/Apache that may require a reconfig of those bits (or a recompile) to get it working on your particular server.

            OK, here’s an update.

I installed a fresh version of MODx. The homepage says "MODx Installation" successful, but our navigation bar shows up on the side.

The pages are using the regular /index.php?id=### URLs as opposed to page.html and work fine. There are no core files.

Then, I go into the manager - change the homepage back to what it should be, refresh the site, it changes the URLs to they work as page.html, and the core file start coming back.

So what does this mean? What exactly is wrong?

Sounds like a problem with your mod_rewrite or apache compile.

We upgraded to the beta as suggested. That seems to have fixed the problem. The site has been up and running without problems (or core files) for a while. The beta seems to run smoothly and I love the new green theme.

Thanks everyone for your help. I guess the database had problems and the upgrade fixed it. Still not sure what the cause was, but I’m glad it is working. I can’t wait to upgrade to the stable for the new version. smiley

Actually, what you’ve got now (running your own content) is going to be shockingly similar to the release. There may be a few more fixes that make it in, but if it’s working for you now, you probably won’t notice much difference.
