I’ve been developing in PHP/MySQL for about 5 or 6 years. I am pretty much self taught with a few minor exceptions.

I have been tasked to update my son’s high school basketball web site and add a cms. It’s hosted at GoDaddy.com on Linux. They have a number of optional open source applications that they will install on my account. I researched and felt like of those to choose from, Joomla! was the best match. However, after having them install it for me, then installing it on my own pc, and looking around at what’s generated, I feel that it isn’t what I was expecting. My son is a senior, so we will only be there this year. I’m by far, the best candidate to design the new site since none of the other parents have any web/html/internet experience whatsoever. I have my layout already done. It doesn’t use any tables and is entirely laid out with css. One problem I have with Joomla is that I want to use this vertical expanding/contracting menu (http://tutorials.alsacreations.com/modelesmenus/vd1.htm) and will have to make major changes to that module in order to use it.

I want a 2 column design with header and footer where the left column is a static width and the right column expands/contracts with the resolution/page width but is not 100% page width. As I stated earlier, I have a layout done. You may review it at: http://www.tigerbasketball.org/dev/index.php.

My question is, is MODx what I’m looking for?

      Hi
I may have a somewhat rare perspective. I am not in the web business and very well may never use any CMS. But I truly enjoy trying to keep up with this ever changing business and learning a bit here and there. I can only follow a selected few projects and this is my favorite.

So, if you will trust that although I am no expert, I do pay attention smiley - Based on your requirements and the fact that you have php/Html and importantly CSS knowledge; you simply belong here.

You already have a layout that looks as if it was developed with Modx!. You will be happy.

      cordially

        Thanks Terri,

I’m going to install it on my laptop. We are headed to a soccer tournament in a few hours, so I will have all weekend to play with it to see if I like it. I have been looking for a solid css style cms for a while. I have another project for an orphanage in Ecuador. You can imagine what a pain it is to keep the site current from such a far distance. That site and the basketball site are very similar.

My html background goes back about 10 years and my Perl goes back about 7, but I avoid Perl like the plague. Pretty much when I learned PHP, I stopped developing in Perl unless my boss said it had to be done in Perl.

        Thanks,
        Alisa
