Hi,
i guess you could achieve this easily with modx.
You could create a TV to store the picture (big format).
Get a js api or use microformat for ajax purpose (loading images in a div)
For instance you could with moo.dom attach a behaviour to each <a> tag with className= class_to_activate_loading
$S('a.class_to_activate_loading').action({
onclick: function(){
//your code to get data
//request content in blank template
//to output html
}
});
To display the thumbs you can take advantage of ditto and phpThumb(auto generation of thumbs).
with a tpl chunk like this one for Ditto
<li><a class="class_to_activate_loading" href="[~[*id*]~]">[[phpThumb? &my_img=[*imgGallery*] ]]</a></li>
The only matter is that ditto performance dicrease when you retrieve a lot of content filtered on TV
hope that makes sense.
:-)
