I’m trying to complete an installation of MODx. The host is SuSe 10.1 with php 5.1.2. The installation instructions for MODx were followed...

    1. Unzip files
    2. Chmod 777 assets/cache, assets/export, assets/images and chmod 666 assets/cache/*
    3. Open url, follow the instructions on the screen.

When it gets to the "Connection Information" page, I enter the database name and user and click the test connection button, it just hangs with a "Testing connection" message.

If I open a terminal session, I can open the database up with the username and password.

If I go back to the "Connection Information" page and put garbage in for the database name, username and database host, I get the same results... "Testing Connection" just stays there, but no error messages. I’ve tried it in IE6, IE7 and FireFox 1.5.

I searched the forums and found a post about php 5.1 not being supported and that was likely the cause. But I also read some posts where people said they were running php 5.1.

Do you think its PHP 5.1 thats causing this? Is there something I could check? Any work arounds?

    Thanks

I’m running on 5.1.2 on my MAMP installation with no problem at all. I don’t know how to help with your problem, but just want to let it be known that it does work.

Since the test of the connection tries to validate your DB-Configuration (username/pass/name of db) perhaps the problem is rather with the MySQL version not the php version? Which MySQL version are you running?

Another possibility is that the mysql extension is not configured on your PHP installation; by default, mysql extensions are no longer configured/included in PHP 5.1+, replaced instead by PDO and a PDO driver for MySQL (and various other db platforms).

Thanks for the feedback.  I ran a phpinfo() check and do not see any referances to MySql.

I did my SuSE install as described in: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_suse_10.1

The step that installed php contained a source (php5-debuginfo) that could not be located. I had assumed Yast installed all of the other packages, but it hadn’t, it stopped on php5-debuginfo. After installing the remainder of the packages everything is fine.
