Hi guys,
I really have tried RTFMing but I find your nomenclature opaque and I’m not sure I’m going about this in the MODx way.
I have a template which is a webpage design i.e. it is a certain layout of cols and styles. For simplicity this layout has within it a headline, a picture and some body copy. These 3 elements are all different in documents created from this template.
The body copy is simple, I put a [*content*] reference into the appropriate part of the template and type my text into the content area of the document editing box and the right thing happens.
Q1: what is the difference between [*content*] and [*#content*] ?
So I created a new TV mytv and made it of type text and allowed the template to access it, I then edited the template to include [*mytv*] (N.B. case sensitive [*MYTV*] is something different) and saved the template. When I opened the document, my placeholder text was present and I could edit the tv, after saving the document my changed tv text was visible in the document.
Q2: Is this right way to go about what I want to achieve? Is there a better way?
I think this is a bug, certainly counter-intuitive behaviour.
When editing a newly opened document, the preview box seems wierd. e.g. edit a document, do nothing, click preview - is blank. click snippets, then click preview again and the preview appears.

Q1: That will enable a QuickEdit button for that bit of content.
Q2: For an image, try using the Image input type, and the Image widget for output. For the headline, just use the [*pagetitle*] or [*longtitle*], and put what you want in those fields when editing the document.
