I am using MODx to translate a relatively simple website for a web designer who will in turn sell it on to their customer.

What makes me assume the title "real world" is that the site is designed by a web designer who neither knows nor cares about CMS (for now), he designs the site using tools like (I guess) Dreamweaver, then gives me a folder of css, js, and html and says in effect "CMS that lot". The final site is intended to be maintained by the end user (and boy, is that raising issues).

Issues are arising, they may be bugs but are more likely to be ignorance. I will document these in a series of posts entitled "A real world web site ..." sticking to one issue per topic. The general theme is "how do you get started with MODx".

Lets begin with installation, there are 2 issues.

This is straightforward enough except that the final step fails because a file manager/includes/config.inc.php is missing. Rather uselessly it tells me to create and chmod this file to proceed. What is this file? why do I need to know about it? and why does the installer not simply offer to create this file if it’s missing.

Say I want to rerun the installer, is it possible to do this to (a) install things I omitted, (b) remove things I don’t need, (c) completely reinstall as though afresh.

      1) It is due to multiple/different server configuration, actually how *nix platform works. The installer automatically creates the config.inc.php on windows servers. We can include a blank config.inc.php in our default distro but what if someone forget to back it up first before upgrading ? even if you are on *nix platform, you have to FTP/CHMOD it before you complete the installation.

On 2nd issue, you can drop the DB in phpmyadmin for fresh install.

      just my 2 cents.

      regards,
