I have some explaining to do.
First of all I don’t want anyone to feel threatened by my claim that
I might use another cms. Nobody will loose in this change but me.

    Since PaulGregory wrote this
As this solves a major requirement, I will be writing this sometime next week, and will release the new elements to the community:
I was only wondering if he had done it.
I also see this as a pretty basic feature. That a user can register and in some way interact or contribute to the site.
Call it news publishing, blogging, forum or whatever.

And believe it or not I actually want to contribute to this wonderful community.
Have’t written a snippet for modx yet but I guess I’ll give it a shot when there is
time. But for now, take it as a threat or whatever, I’ll simply use another tool
that already has this feature implemented and fully working.

I’ll dig in and read about how to create snippets later tonight.
Don’t really know how modx handles tables but ajayre:s way seems
    most straightforward.

    A table containing fields like
    id
    author
    date
    subject
    message

And then as said a snippet that runs some
    simple input query

    and another snippet that fetches
the data needed with a select.

sure this would be pretty easy to implement.
But really totally unintegrated from modx.
But I’ll give it a try.

It is integrated with MODx. MODx is a framework that allows you to build upon it. The only part that is "outside" of MODx would be the new table and even then the MODx API makes it easy for you to access any tables in the database. MODx isn’t like other CMSs - i.e. a complete application that you tweak. MODx is far more flexible, as shown by the multiple ways you can do the same thing.

Tables are stored in a MySQL database. Install phpMyAdmin to view the tables and create your own.

Note that there are already snippets for blogs and adding user comments. These allow users to add content to existing pages. Just that there isn’t anything for users to create and manage their own open-ended page. Even if there was you would probably want to customize it anyway because there are a million different types of information that you might want users to put on their pages, depending on what kind of site you are creating.

I hope this helps. This is a great community and you will get plenty of help creating the snippets, etc. if you ask. grin

I’m working on a pretty good database manager on my demo site. It would be easy enough to add a "make table" feature to it.

          @flying_c:

          Seems you overlooked this:

And yes, I did say I’d be doing something similar soon, but client priorities changed. It’s still a possibility, but it ain’t gonna happen in the near future.
ie the answer is "No, I’ve not actually written it yet".

Anyway. Lets help you out here. I’m offering two methods:

          Deal One
          Based on this fact:

MODx documents also have a "createdby" field, just match that up with the SESSION webInternalKey to allow editing.
I have realised that the "only edit own content" issue is fairly straightforward to solve.
So, if you put together the personal page creation, using the existing stuff, I’ll tell you how to secure it so only the right user can edit it.

          Deal Two
If you can’t get that far, then please supply a mock-up of how the "personal page" should look, and how the entry form should look. Then we can more precisely discuss which of the many many ways to achieve this in MODx is most appropriate.
No, I don't know what OpenGeek's saying half the time either.

Very interresting thread, as I’m evaluating MODx and this was one of my main concerns.

Earlier I used Mambo where you default can only edit your own documents. But using Mambo to build a site where one core function is users being able making and styling their "own homepage" within my site would be "impossible". I think I need somthing like... hmmm... MODx? wink

I’m still a newbie, but I’ll work a lof of making functions in MODx to let users make their own pages, maybe I can contribute with some solutions later. But by then I’m sure somone already made a good snippet to add this functionality to MODx. smiley

Please keep posting in this thread if you make any progress on this subject, I’m sure lots of people need this functionality.

I’ll look in the other forums to see if someone else is already working on this.

Sorry for my bad english smiley
