Right now I create custom mods on an as-needed basis for clients, but some of them could be packaged up as modules or plugins for others to use. In a perfect world I wouln’t have to worry about paying bills and could share all of my work for free, but with the time involved in developing and supporting mods it’s just not feasible. I think having a ModX marketplace would fill that niche for people willing to pay for commercial mods, and the fact that some of the proceeds supports the MODx project will definitely help the community, both developers and users.
I am very much in favor of Ryan’s idea, if we are to have commercial addons having a marketplace and giving back a portion of the proceeds is a nice thought.
Another alternative that I would like to see (and that I try to do) is having clients pay for the development of custom features, and have them agree to have whatever plugin, module or snippet GPLed. The way I advocate this is emphasis on the benefits from community testing, debugging and improvements (you rarely if ever get that with commercial products). This is a cost they don’t have to pay and the return is IMHO well worth the investment. Plus, they get positive advertising from funding open source software
Of course, a share is given back to the dev team in the process

This way you get to pay the bills and get paid for it. Like Silent said, if on top of that you charge for the extensions, then we fall into the Joomla pit and I wouldn’t like that at all... you quickly kill community dynamics doing that...
