Sorry if this is a stupid question. I’ve searched, but can’t find an answer to my specific problem. I’ve enabled friendly URL’s and changed my ht.access file to .htaccess as required. Now I can’t log into the manager. Change the file back to ht.access and I can (of course my friendly URL’s don’t work). What have I done??
note that there are 2 htaccess files which must be modified when using friendly urls.
The one that goes in the site root, and then there is also one in the root of the manager folder which must also be renamed so that the url rewritng is turned off there. They must both be named .htaccess and then put in the appropriate place on the server.
btw, welcome to the community
I have no ideas here, but I stumbled upon this post which is very similar:

It’s all to hard for me I’m afraid. I don’t have any problems with my site loading. Just the manager interface. Just changed .htaccess in the root folder back to ht.access and came up straight away. I’ll work on it. How important are "friendly URL’s"?

The .htaccess file affect the folder it’s in and all of its subfolders. So you rename the ht.access file in the root to .htaccess. Now all pages in the whole site will be affected. But you don’t want the manager pages affected. So there is another ht.access file in the /manager folder that simply turns off the rewrite engine. You need to also rename it to .htaccess. That’s all.
If you have to ask why friendly urls are important, then they probably aren’t important at all for you.
