Maybe your upload got corrupted when you ftp’ed the files over to your server. Try to upload again and if you can, make sure all files get uploaded ok. Also if you have a shell access to your server, you could try to upload the tar.gz file and extract it at your server end to ensure that all files will be there.

Upload the folders assets, install, manager and files ht.access, index.php to your ftp server to some subdirectory or root. Then access install folder via web browser.

            Connection Information
            Database connection and login information
Please enter the name of the database created for MODX. If you there is no database yet, the installer will attempt to create a database for you. This may fail depending on the MySQL configuration or the database user permissions for your domain/installation.
            Database name:
            " name="databasename" />
            Table prefix:
            " name="tableprefix" />

Now please enter the login data for your database.

            Database host:
            " name="databasehost" />
            Database login name:
            " />
            Database password:
            " />

Now you’ll need to enter some details for the main administrator account. You can fill in your own name here, and a password you’re not likely to forget. You’ll need these to log into Admin once setup is complete.

            Administrator username:

No, I can see that part of the page is being parsed. I wonder if the end-of-line is not what your AIX expects, and the comment lines are getting messed up? That happens from time to time.

No, that is not normal. You should not be seeing the code. Somewhere along the line the file got corrupted, and is not being recognized as PHP.
