When system automatically creates an alias, it inserts "_" betweeb words. But there should be dashes. Standard says, that dashes divide words and are the same as spaces, _s don’t. This is also how Google and other search engines treats URLs.
- this_is_one_word for Google and will be indexed like one word, however
- this-are-four-words
Also, why is strtolower($alias) commented out?
I think this should be changed.
As far as this is in bug tracker and David Molliere agreed, I’ve made that change in SVN.

This is to allow you capital letters in alias, e.g. My-Document.html
Do we need this? I think it’s a usability violation.

The fix is already there in bug tracker: http://modxcms.com/bugs/task/371
I know (but it wasn’t implemented, at least in the SVN tree I have).
