    I am creating a multi-language site and am having problems with unicode, I guess. Just for testing purposes, I am using Google translate to translate some phrases, so we know what it looks like when we click on the different flags or languages. Everything is working pretty well. I even added another TV to ensure proper META encoding:

    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="[*Lang*]" lang="[*Lang*]" dir="ltr">

    which converts to:

    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="ru" lang="ru" dir="ltr">

    I also added the UTF declaration:

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />

    When I copy something from the Google page to the editor window (Все, что Вам нужно. . . В одном месте!), it looks fine until I save it and then it goes to

    ???, ??? ??? ?????. . . ? ????? ?????!

    I tried changing the input character map and tried typing Russian directly into the editor. Same thing.

    I was reduced to converting them to HTML entities, but that doesn’t work long term.

    Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I want to be able to hand this off to our translators, so they can easily do the translations with Quickedit, if possible.

    Using:
    MODx 0.9.6.2 (rev 3281)
    TinyMCE - 2.1.2:
    Firefox 2.0.0.11 (Also tried in IE7, Safari 3)
    WinXP
      Just learning the ropes.

      You need to provide detailed information about your database settings, especially charset/collation settings, which must match the MODx configuration for database_connection_charset (i.e. utf8_unicode_ci?) and the output encoding (i.e. UTF-8) you’ve selected.

        OK, that headed me in the right direction. Thanks, Jason. I checked out the mysql backup and each table is set to latin1. Now I just need to get phpmyadmin installed so I can do something about it. MySQL CLI is a little above me on this.

        What would happen if I used the backup with Programmers Notepad and replaced latin1 with utf8 and then restored the changed .sql file?
