If I create a new blank child gallery, I can’t manage it from my web front end user UNTIL I load one image from inside the back-end manager, or by being logged in as my site admin user.
Is there a way round this?

OK, so how do people that build sites for clients handle this? Do you give them access to the manager ?
It seems odd that I have to manage the gallery from the back to load one image before I can manage it from the web site...

It can be managed by going to the childgallery document.. The childgallery display type just doesn’t show galleries that do not have any pictures in them.
