Is there are recommended maximum number of images per gallery before phx starts freaking out?
Mostly harmless.
Depends on your server environment.. some are experiencing issues around 70 pics per page, but others have 150-200 without problems.
Still, it’s always good to enable picture paging or create custom templates with less PHx code in them to avoid these issues. When you select your display type, you can remove almost 90% of the code from maxigallery default templates that relates to the other display types.. and that’ll remove lots of inner PHx code too.

I’ve split a dysfunctional gallery of 300+ images down to 150 which seems to be working. While the frontend was still working ok with big numbers300, the gallery manager was becoming unwieldly to use and not saving.

So you are telling that if I put 90 pictures in one gallery, and manage button doesn’t work anymore as it should (loosing session after saving changes, lost manage button), it’s probably something with server config?
Because everything is more than fine when I try with small gallery (on same domain) with no more than 10-20 pic’s.

OK, but I have exactly the same problem but with smaller number of pictures...
Upload is OK (through html form or ftp), when I press "Manage button" I’m getting list of all pictures, but if I change anything (hide/delete/title/desc) and try to save changes, I’m only get list of all pictures (without default css) and session is lost (I have to login again into manager in other tab)...
Checked in FF, IE, Opera.
