Most snippets that are more involved than just a few lines have language files where all output content is defined. Output structure is often defined in templates that can be from various sources; chunks, files, even directly in the parameter that specifies where the template is to be found. MaxiGallery default templates are in the assets/snippets/maxigallery/templates directory.
When I saw this line
<a href="[+maxigallery.previous_page_url+]">[+maxigallery.strings.previous+]</a> |
I figured there had to be a language file with the "strings" part defined; this looks a lot like a Javascript construct.
