Because some programs in Windows don’t like a file name starting with a period, i changed the name of the ".phpthumb_cache" gallery to "phpthumb_cache" (removed the period). i also changed this in my snippet myimage:phpthumb on the code below (i get the same failure if i leave the folder name with the period):
$PHPTHUMB_CONFIG['cache_directory'] = dirname(__FILE__).'/../../images/phpthumb_cache/'; // set the cache directory relative to the phpThumb() installation - assets/images/phpthumb_cache by default
