Is there an easy way to do pagination when using display=`childgalleries`? I tried pics_per_page but it doesn’t seem to work in this mode.

Nope..
You’re better off using Ditto to list the gallery documents and then use MaxiGallery in Ditto’s row template to fetch a picture / pictures from the gallery with &view_gallery=`[+id+]` in the maxigallery call.
Ditto can do paging etc then.
