MaxiGallery newbie questions

Hi,

I’m new to MaxiGallery. I read the help on the wiki but have some trouble getting that snippet to work.

What I want to do is grouping my pictures in folders and display all the pictures from a folder as thumbnails.
The same document would also display the full sized image of the "mouse-overed" thumbnail (probably using Ajax). Something very common as you can see.

There is some code for this on the wiki but I could not make it work yet.

First question, why does MaxiGallery require a parent "folder" document and at least one child document of that parent ?

Seems that there are 2 snippet calls: one with &display=`childgalleries` (from the parent document) and another with &display=`embedded` (from the child document).
Could someone explain a little bit the concept behind ?

Secondly, I imagine that the "gallery" folder contains subfolders with the miscellaneous galleries.
Does those subfolders require some specific name ?
For example "123" if the thumbnails have to be displayed on document 123 ?
If other folder names are possible, how to I match the folder name with the snippet call ?

Thirdly, what about the thumbnails. Do I have to create them explicitely ?
I assume this is done automatically at runtime, but do I need to configure something ?
The thumbnails names or anything else ?

Lastly, is there a way to _not_ display any button ?
I don’t want to make a gallery where people can upload images; just display pictures the same way that Ditto can display document fields.

it’t actually not clear to me what you mean with "grouping my pictures in folders", but if you uload pictures with MaxiGallery, it will create a folder for those images within your galleries folder (assets/gallerries/idofyourdocument).

no, you can setup a MaxiGallery in any document, but if you’ve got several galleries within a folder and you want to display an overview of all your galleries, you would setup a MaxiGallery-call in your parent-folder with a "&display=`childgalleries`" parameter in it.

your gallery folder doesn’t need to contain folders for your galleries, could be just documents holding your galleries. and no need for specific names

thumbnails will be created automatically while uploading, check out the MaxiGallery parameters in the Wiki -> http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/MaxiGallery you can determine the size, quality etc.

i don’t understand 100% - there won’t be a button for non-manager users, so anybody viewing your site won’t see a button, just your galleries...

Make sure that you run the snippet uncached [!...!] or have the document set to uncached.
