I’m trying to make it so that users are forced to fill in the image description fields that appear following uploading an image. Is there a way to force this?
Not really.. The easiest way to do this would be to add validation using javascript what is executed before form is submitted.

Where would I insert the Javascript? I’ve taken a look but I’m not very familiar with PHP at all. I presume this would be added into the MaxiGallery.php file but I’ve no idea where. Any ideas?
No you can add the js to maxigallery templates.. Create a new chunk with the contents of default manageOuterTpl and add your js there. Then define your custom template in maxigallery snippet call. See wiki page for more info about the templates.
manageOuterTpl is used for the picture management, so the js will go to the correct place.
