Doze can you think on a way to set the title on images to the child gallery pagetitle if the user didn’t supply
any title when they upload the picture?

Yep, do like rajfantastic said in every place where title is displayed in all templates.. that affects very much to the readability of the templates though..
another option would be is to do a custom phx modifier e.g. snippet named "phx:htmlentdefaultitle"

Then in maxigallery templates, replace :htmlent with :htmlentdefaultitle
