populating new child galleries of arbitrary depth

Hi, I’m new to this. I have created a fairly deep hierarchy of child galleries under the "My Galleries" directory that I was instructed to create in ModX. When I go to the front end to manage the (now empty) galleries, which I would think should appear, since the My Galleries maxigallery call indicates to show child galleries, the empty galleries don’t show up. If I manually navigate to the galley directories (by typing the url!), I do get a "manage" button and I can then upload files, and then the child galleries appear. If I ftp files in, I can also sync the files and have them appear. But this seems arcane. I must be missing something, as I would think that empty galleries would somehow be displayed as links like populated galleries.

Why is this important? Well, for a complex structure with lots of child galleries, showing them all isn’t convenient. I want child galleries to be displayed one level deep, so that you have to navigate down into the galleries as they appear in the ModX file system. If members of the hierarchy contain empty galleries, these are not displayed, and I can’t access the lower-level child galleries.

Note, all child galleries have &display=`childgalleries` &childgalleries_level_limit=`1` set, so they should be displaying the children. Do empty galleries not get displayed?

Don’t know if I catch the difference of going to a childgallery front-end _or_ going there by url?
The manage button will show up if you are logged in, maybe that’s why you don’t see the _manage button_?

Is it the manage button you miss or do you want link automatically show up to the actual document?

Then use wayfinder, ditto or prevnextjump snippet!?

As I said, I can use the manage button. What I lack is a link to empty child galleries. I see what you mean about using Ditto, but then what’s the point of the display options in Maxigallery?

Do I understand you correct that if you upload atleast one picture in your galleries there is no problem?
I think you can hack the code to change MaxiGallery default not show anything if there is nothing to show, to show
something even if there is nothing to show. But easier then is that you upload a picture in the gallery... ?

Yes, this is correct, if there is a picture, the gallery shows up, but this makes it very tedious to add pictures ot the gallery from the front end (go to the manager, copy the url, paste into browser, hit manage button. Repeat. From the back end its the same, since MG doesn’t recognize automatically images added using ftp, so you have to manually navigate to the gallery page to populate it. Maxigallery *should* just show you the unpopulated galleries, as these may be parents of populated galleries.

I’m going to try a workaround using Ditto.

Yes, MaxiGallery only shows the childgalleries that have pictures in them. The reason for this is that when maxigallery looks for the childgallery document, it checks them in it’s on database table. And the table only have results if there has been pictures uploaded to that gallery.

It would be difficult to get MaxiGallery to list the empty galleries, because how would it know if the document is a gallery document or just a normal document? It would need to render each document and try to find if maxigallery is somewhere in the source. Or if maxigallery would create a table that lists all gallery documents, you would have to first visit all documents that maxigallery would be run and it would be able to mark the document as a gallery document..

So... this won’t happen in MaxiGallery. But if you have created your galleries so that each gallery is under some certain document and all of the child documents are galleries, then you can easily list them all with ditto or wayfinder like said above. There’s no reason that one snippet would do everything, that’s the "principle" of modx is that snippets are small bit’s of code that usually have templateable output and play nice together, so you can build complex stuff with using various snippets.

I’m certainly not saying that maxigallery is perfect... it’s quite old snippet and it has design flaws.. all I can say that the successor of it for revolution will be a lot better, someday.

I think i’m wanting to do the same thing as the person above. I’m wanting to create a main photo gallery page, main categories under that page, then sub-categories underneath each main category. Here’s what I’m going for:

I’m trying to make a "Photo Gallery" page that has "Automobiles", "Trains", and "Planes" main categories. There would be a thumbnail for each of these main categories on the photo gallery page.

Then , when you click on "automobiles" you would come to a page with sub categories like "Cars" and "Trucks". These child galleries’ thumbnails would show on the parent gallery "automobiles" page, but the "automobiles" thumbnail itself shouldn’t show on the automobiles page, it should only show on it’s parent page "photo galleries". By specifying display child galleries on the automobiles page it correctly shows the thumbnails for the cars and trucks child galleries, but it also shows the picture I uploaded for the "automobiles" thumbnail that appears on the photo galleries page.

You can create a custom template form maxigallery so that it shows only the childgalleries, not the thumbnails from that specific document. So just create a new chunk based on the default galleryOuterTpl and remove the parts from it that show thumbnails. Then use that custom template in this snippet call.
