I can’t figure out WHERE I’m supposed to see this "manage pictures" button
Ok, first off, where should you should see the "manage pictures" button
(assuming maxigallery is installed correctly and that your snippet calls are correct):
1.View the gallery page on the front end (public site) where you want to add pictures.
2.Make sure you are logged into the manager using the same url prefix as you are using to view the page. (ie. if you are in the manager with www.yourdomain.com/manager then view your site with www.yourdomain.com/mygallery and NOT
http://yourdomain.com/mygallery because otherwise you won´t see the manage pictures button)
Basically think of the admin side of maxigallery like a quickedit feature.......everything is done from the front end (or FTP, but lets leave that for now).

This will probably happen to you a lot, it does for me anyway. This is because your are using the richtext editor to insert code and your snippet ends up on multiple lines, a snippet call must have the whole call one 1line, so 2 options:
1. To correct the code that´s already there you can just click on the html view (top row, 2nd from right in document content editor buttons), un-check "word wrap" and make sure its all on 1 line. Save, and back refresh the front end page.
2. When editing a page you can turn off the rich text: look for "page settings" tab (under document settings), un-check "Rich text?", save and continue editing.
