You get the square to your thumbnails probably because you are using dropshadow in thumbnails and you do not have white background on your page. You can set the dropshadow background color with &thumb_shadow_bgcolor parameter. By default it’s FFFFFF.
The pictures won’t open in lightbox probably because you are using some other js library on the page what collides with lightbox and it’s prototype/scriptaculous libraries. For example quickedit uses mootools. Try using the slimbox display type, it uses mootools.

Thanks for the suggestions, I’m new to modx so I think they’re pointing me closer to finding out why maxgallery is not working, I just need to keep digging!
I have a white background and using that parameter with FFFFFF makes no difference to the display, I still get a box around my thumb nails, in fact I’ve tried using this:
[!MaxiGallery? &display=`embedded` &embedtype=`slimbox` &pics_per_row=`3` &max_thumb_size=`110` &max_pic_size=`0`!]
It includes the slimbox embedtype, but this has no effect, the thumbnails still open the jpg directly onto a new page.
The default template for my site is ModxLight, could this have anything to do with it?
I haven’t installed any js scripts to the site after the default demo site installation other than maxigallery.
Is there a problem using MaxiGallery with Modx with a vanilla install out of the tin?
Do you think it’s worth me doing a complete reinstall but this time choosing not to install the demo site? could it be this that is causing the problem?
Have you tried while logged out of the Manager? Sometimes it may a conflict between a javascript form MaxiGallery and the MooTools from QuickEdit so the problem only exists while logged in as manager.
What do you mean about the square around thumbnails? do you mean purple border? that’s the default link border for images. If that’s the case, you need to set img{border:0} to your css file.
For the lightbox/slimbox opening issue, view the page source and see what js files is included to the head of your page. It should have the lightbox/slimbox js files there, depending on which type you use. If there is nothing, you need to add them manually to your templates. I have seen couple times that the js files are not added automatically to the <head>.
Also see the javascript console from your browser for possible error messages.

Ok thanks again, looks like I need to do a lot of reading to get this to work. The page has next to nothing on it when i view source, certainly no references to the js files I need, this is the contents of the page if I right click and view source:
<p>
<div class="thumbscontainer">
<ul class="thumbs">
<li>
<a href="/modx/assets/galleries/48/1bc_006.JPG" rel="lightbox[maxigallery]" title="pool - ">
<img src="/modx/assets/galleries/48/tn_1bc_006.JPG" class="thumbnail" title="pool » Click to zoom ->" alt="pool » Click to zoom ->" />
</a>
<p style="width: 110px;">pool</p>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
</p>
I’m not sure how to add the js files to the header, or the right ones I need to add so I’ll have to do some reading this week.
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction though, I think I can get to the bottom of this once I understand how the cms works.
Umm.. where’s your page head source? eg. <html><head> etc..
You need to have the <head> tag so that MODx knows where to include the js code.
"He can have a lollipop any time he wants to. That's what it means to be a programmer."
I have no idea.
The steps I took were:
1) Install Modx with default example site
2) Add the maxigallery snippet to my resources
3) Add a new document with the above maxigallery snippet in the detail, unticking the cache option.
4) Publish the document
5) Upload some pictures
That’s it. I need to read up on how to add the head tag to new documents in modx.
You have to set up a template for your document first. See
